Unix is officially written as UNIX but sometimes it is also written in small caps. It is widely known across the globe as an operating system. It was developed at the Bell Labs by one group of developers who were the employees of AT&T in year 1969. The group of developers which was originally behind its creation was included Joe Ossanna, Douglas Mcllroy, Brian Kernighan, Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson.
Currently there are several branches of UNIX operating system that are widely known all over the world and were developed by the developers of AT&T over the different time periods. There is also involvement of different other vendor in creating different branches of this operating system along in which several non-profit organizations are also included.

The trademark “UNIX” is owned by a standard consortium of the computer industry which is known as “The Open Group”. This trademark is allowed to use only those systems that are found certified and compliant as per the qualification standards that have been set by “Single UNIX Specification”. All the other systems, that are unable to pass this qualification test, may be called as “UNIX-Like” or another name is given to them i.e. “UNIX system-like”. But these terms are not certified by “The Open Group” to use with any system running UNIX operating system.

Because “The Open Group” allows using the term “UNIX” for those operating systems that are considered closely related to the systems that are trademarked by them. During the start of 1970s, this operating system was on its peak in the academic circles and it continued in command till the start of 1980s in a large scale. This operating system can be used both in workstation as well as in server.
