Sun Microsystems is the organization originally behind creating the Solaris operating system which is now managed by Unix. When this operating system was created by this organization, their previously designed operating system which is known as SunOS (Sun Operating System) was superseded by it. This operating system was designed by them in year 1992.
Current name of this operating system is Oracle Solaris because the organization of Sun Microsystems had been acquired by the Oracle Corporation in the month of January this year i.e. 2010. Scalability is the main feature of this Solaris operating system especially when it is installed and operated on the SPARC systems. Many innovative features can be originated by this operating system like Time Slider, ZFS and DTrace. X86-based workstations along with the workstations that are known as SPARC-based workstations and servers are being supported by this operating system.

This operating system is certified by its creator against the single specification of Unix operating system which is commonly known as “Single Unix Specification”. Although historical owner of this operating system was the proprietary software as it was developed by them but it can be managed and installed on almost every big name under the server’s category as every server that is manufactured by any vender can be supported by this operating system.

Major codebase of Solaris operating system is commonly known as the software that falls under the category of open source software and it can be downloaded from a project whose name has been told as “OpenSolaris” for absolutely free of cost. It is widely known that a common code base is used by the Solaris operating system for the platforms that are used and supported by it likei86pc and the very famous SPARC.
