File system is commonly known as a method which is used to organize or store the files along with the data included in those files in a computer. It is also written sometime as filesystem. Most important part of their work is that the files or data into these files are being organized by this method into different databases in order to make them organize, store, retrieve or manipulate easily by the operating system of that computer.

Data storage devices are commonly known for using file system like CD-ROMs or physical drives like hard disks and it is used by them in order to maintain and organize the physical location of the computer data which is included in the files. In addition to this function, access to that stored data is also granted by this method on a file server as they may also work as a client for any protocol of computer network like 9P, SMB, NFS etc.

Registry along with directory service is used to distinguish file system. A data storage device which is commonly known as an underlying device for the data storage is mostly used by the file system. It actually offers an easy access to physical sectors of a fixed-size array of a storage device.

Organization of these physical sectors is the responsibility of file system and it organizes them in directories and files. It also keeps record of association of any sector to any file like which file is associated or attached to which sector for the purpose of data storage? It also keeps track of those physical sectors that are still unused by the system for data storage.
