SRI ANANTHA PADMANABHASWAMY AT THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

SRI ANANTHA PADMANABHASWAMY AT THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple is considered as one among the seven Parashurama Kshetras in Kerala and one among the 108 sacred temples in India dedicated to Lord Vishnu.  The ancient texts of Padma Purana and Skanda Purana have mentions about this temple. The idol inside is in the form of the Lord Anantha Padmanabhaswamy is reclining on the Holy Serpent Anantha. It is an 18 feet long imposing figure built with Salagrama stones brought from Nepal and it is covered with gold and precious stones.  Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple is a famous Hindu temple of Lord Vishnu at Thiruvananthapuram.  The main deity, Padmanabhaswamy, is a form of Vishnu in Anananthasayanam posture (in eternal sleep).

The LORD`S ETERNAL SLEEP CAN BE  viewed through three different doors
While the first and second doors show the torso, head, hands and midriff of Lord Vishnu, the third door offers a view of the feet of the holy God. Another characteristic of the temple is that only Hindu devotees are allowed to enter into its premises along with a particular dress code.

This temple in its present form was built by Maharaja Marthanda Varma (1729-1758), one of the most powerful rulers of Travancore. The work on the temple was started in 1731. In 1750. The Maharaja dedicated his kingdom to Lord Padmanabha, the presiding deity of the kingdom and assumed the title Padmanabhadasa or the servant of Lord Padmanabha. From that day onwards the rulers of Travancore (Royal family and dynasty) carry out all their princely and spiritual duties as the servants of the Lord Vishnu.

The sculpture of Lord Vishnu, the presiding Deity of the Sri Anantha Padmanabhaswamy Temple, is aesthetically embellished with stone and gold. Reclined on the great snake called Anantha this idol of the temple has a length of 18 feet. The unique trait of the Sri Anantha Padmanabhaswamy Temple is that the entire idol can be seen part by part through the three doors of the shrine.
The royal family members of Travancore are custodians of the rich heritage, culture and the rich treasure and have preserved, saved and secured the honour of HINDUISM AND all along have maintained the Sri Anantha Padmanabhaswamy Temple.
